Are you an enthusiast of camping,
or have you always wanted to attempt it? It is a great way to decrease the cost
of your holidays and can be an incredible experience in itself, getting you
closer to the natural world. It does, though, mean that you will need to deal
with some quite limited facilities; so there are many things that you need to
take into account, some of which are mentioned below:
- Accommodation
If you have a disability that
involves your legs, it is important that you pay extra attention on the
accommodation. A better idea for most of the people is house tents, big
rectangular tents with full-size doors that you can take a wheelchair
throughout. Best of all are trailer tents, which crinkle out of a trailer you
can drag behind your car. In case you use a ramp to access the raised section,
it is comparatively easy to get in and out of the raised beds without having to
injure your legs. Taller tents can also house raised beds.
- Select a camp site
When selecting a camp site, there
are quite a few things you might need to take into account. The first is the
ease of access of the site itself. How close can you take your car to the area?
Are any parts of the site separated and terraced by steps? Are there any sharp
slopes to consider? The location of the site can also be significant. Many camp
sites are located on cliffs or hillsides where strong winds can be a problem.
This can be difficult if you have issues in walking and it can also cause problems
with house tents, which are susceptible to fall down in windy conditions.
You might also need to think
about site facilities. Some camp sites have disabled toilets, but most of the
toilets blocks are spacious enough to house wheelchairs. Check that they have
level access, and do not forget to ask about showers too, as these may be
separate. In case there is a swimming pool you would like to use, ensure there
are appropriate steps so that you can get in and out of it. Keep in mind that
many camp sites are small family-run places so there might not be a guard at
the pool who can assist you.
When you are camping you will
typically need to take care of your own catering arrangements. This might mean
that you need to do a bit of research about the local area to ensure there are
accessible shops selling the things you require. If this seems possibly to be a
trouble, talk to the camp site owners and check if they would be eager to pick
up some groceries for you. Moreover, camping stoves can be quite tricky and can
present issues for people with limited movement or strength in their hands.
There are, however, numerous modern designs in which this is less of a trouble.
