Crabbing on the coast is a pastime shared by many Oregonians. It is a year-round activity that pretty much always yields success, especially if you get off the docks and use a boat. Yeah, it can get cold this time of year, but it’s pretty hard to care about that when you’re pulling up a pot of fresh Dungees and envisioning the buttery lemon-garlic sauce that will soon meet them on your dinner plate.

If you live close to the coast, lucky you, you can probably comfortably pull off a day trip. But for those of us who live a little inland, getting to the coast can be an event, and one that is best prolonged. Camping is cool, but winter isn’t such a great time to be in a tent, no matter how much hot chocolate you bring along. So how do you pull off a killer cold-weather winter crabbing trip to Coos Bay on a shoestring budget while staying warm? The Oregon State Parks and Recreation Department has your back:

At spots like Sunset Bay State Park, for $36 you can rent a yurt that’s just minutes from the beach, and be ready to collect crustaceans at the crack of dawn. Hey, it’s not a luxury hotel room but it sure beats sleeping on the ground, and if you appreciate electric heating, you really can’t beat this deal. There are a few parks up and down the coast where you can rent yurts or small cabins, a quick internet search will reveal plenty of solid locations.
Crabbing from a boat is non-stop action. On a day with calm weather you can pull this off in the bay on a 14-foot aluminum lake boat. A pair of crab rings, a healthy amount of rope, and some buoys can keep you busy for hours. Just pick a spot, drop your rings, and repeat. By the time you’ve dropped the second crab ring, it will be time to turn around and check on the first one. Make sure to drop your rings far enough apart so they aren’t competing with each other. In Coos Bay, motoring out past the jetty and dropping your rings in about 7O feet of water is a good place to start. You can work the bank across from the boat launch but there are more crabs out in the deeper water.

Chicken or fish are good choices for bait, but if you really want to lay out an underwater buffet, use both. And by all means, make sure to use something to lock up your bait box, or the seals with rob you blind—zip ties work well for this, but you have to keep cutting and re-zipping them as the day goes on. Local bait shops around the marina sell little rigs that will keep the critters out, and they’re reusable.
Oh yeah, you’re going to want to bring along a crab gauge. With your shellfish license, you are permitted to take 12 male Dungeness crabs that measure 5 ¾” inches across the back (or, carapace). If you’re new to crabbing, holding those delicious Dungees still for a quick measurement can be a tricky sort of endeavor. Just remember that crabs like to be kept at ease, shaking them out of the pot works way better than trying to reach in and grab them. If you forget, you will be reminded—some of these crabs sport big claws.

What is a Survivor?

Various studies have given various definitions for the survivor personality. When classified into themes, we can say that a survivor is someone who:
  • Has survived a major crisis or challenge
  • Surmounted the crisis through personal effort
  • Emerged from the experience with new strengths
  • Finds values in the experience.
Whether you’re someone who has gone through a major crisis, or just someone trying to be prepared for these challenges like a survivalist, it takes a survivor mindset to get better.

Characteristics of a Survivor

Equip yourself with these five attributes that combine to form a survivor’s mindset. However, beware that each has its kryptonite.

Mental Toughness

It’s not just about physical prowess or stamina, but the strength of your will and your mind. Tolerate the intolerable and overpower your weakness. 
However, its kryptonite is the declining mental capacity. It is uncommon for someone who went through a tragedy to retain 100% of their normal mental faculties. Fatigues, injuries, dehydration, and lack of sleep can cause people to lose their minds. 
Make sure to monitor yourself and other survivors for depression, anger, hyperactivity, etc. 

Positive Attitude

However cliche it sounds, a positive attitude is necessary in the face of a survival situation and is one of the most important skills. Practice this attitude every day and you’ll be determined to get out of unfortunate circumstances like getting lost in the wood or stuck in a disaster.   
Pessimism is the kryptonite of a positive attitude. A pessimist will always focus on the bad side of a situation and often feel overwhelmed. The person can be so negative that they just volunteer themselves as prey of wild animals instead of creating traps and cooking them.
Suck it up and try to stay as positive as you can, while maintaining a grip on reality. iF you have weaknesses, work on them instead of losing hope. It’s hard to put so much time into things you find difficult, but it’s the only way you’re going to get any better.

Motivation

When everything has gone south, what or who is your motivation to stay alive? Some stories of survivors claim they survived through their devotion to religion, or their desire to go back to their family and friends. It’s really different for everyone, and only you can tell what or who will keep you going.
Hopelessness is your biggest enemy here. Don’t let it eat you alive.

Work Ethic

One’s attitude towards work is a huge consideration of the survivor’s mindset. Learn how to stick to your job by practicing and practicing until it is done. Don’t do things half-assed, but exert all the effort that you can.
Laziness is work ethic’s kryptonite. It is seeking the easiest path that you think will get you through the problem, but will only cause a more serious problem. Don’t just lounge around your camp waiting for someone to find and rescue you. Learn how to forage, build a bonfire, and gather water!

Adaptability

Adapt to changing events, situations, and environments since this is the main key to survival. Learn to recognize the things that are worth continuing and the things you shouldn’t abandon. 
Other than being stubborn to die, don’t be stubborn! Don’t refuse to adapt or don’t be afraid of change. Don’t let this bad attitude kill you.

How to be a Better Survivor

Here are other ways for you to become a better survivor.
  • Don’t stop teaching yourself. With all the five characteristics mentioned, it will create a survivor out of you who continue learning as much as you can. Once you stop, it will be harder for you to continue that you might go back to zero. Push through whenever you feel worn out, lessening how much you’re learning if you have to.
  • Practice! It does not end in reading or watching videos about being a survivor. Take what you learned and exercise it. Don’t just trust you’ll be able to make a fire after it’s rained because you’ve read about it. Test yourself to make sure you can reproduce what your head knowledge dictates you should be able to do.
  • Incorporate survivalism in your daily life.  Take regular camping trips, start barbecue with firesteels, filter water through your improvised filter, forage for mushroom and other plants! Use what you have learne as regularly as possible so you won’t forget them.
  • Assess your own skills and limits. No one is perfect, so try to recognize your expertise and make sure the skill stays with you always. It’s also important to know your limits and what you will find difficult in survival situations. Hope for the best, but if you’re in a survival situation where it’s getting late in the day and you are no expert at making shelters from scratch, you may want to save yourself some time and valuable energy/calories by looking for a good “natural” shelter instead

Define Your Purpose for Thru-Hiking


Walking the AT might be your actual purpose. But that’s different from completing the AT thru-hike. Both are wonderful, but the latter takes focus and effort. That said, you must realize that it is necessary to acknowledge what you are signing up for when you decide to thru-hike.


It means walking for almost half a day in all types of weather, being away from normal nights of sleep, and it also means having achy bones from time to time. Align the purpose with how much time you have, your fitness level, the elevation gain, time of the year, and your planned food supply.


Learn Thru-Hike Lingo


Like any close-knit community, thru-hikers have a language of their own. Here are some words and phrases you might hear:



  • NOBO – north-bound
  • SOBO – south-bound
  • Bounce Box – a box used to tighten your load
  • Hike your own hike – happiness comes from knowing yourself and hiking accordingly. Respect the hiking style of other hikers.
  • Hiker midnight – the usual time when thru-hikers are usually asleep, which is 9 PM
  • Camel up – Drink as much water as possible because it’s a long way to the next water source.
  • Trail magic – unexpected help along the journey
  • Yoyo – Completing a thru-hike, then turning around and completing it in the opposite direction.
  • Triple crown – having completed a thru-hike in the Appalachian Trail, the Pacific Crest Trail, and the Continental Divide Trail.


Preparing Food and Water


It can be tough to know how much food you need when you go thru-hiking. The rule of thumb for how much to eat during a hike is 200-300 calories per hour. For water intake, half a liter per hour is enough when your activity is moderate in terms of temperature, the intensity of the hike, your age, and your body type.

Prepare and Test Your Gear


Aside from the set of skills you need, high-quality pieces of equipment are needed. Go for more lightweight yet robust gear. Invest in high-quality boots, even try buying multiple pairs of the same design so you will have new ones when they break along the trip.


Once your checklist is complete and all ticked off, make sure to test them. Many tend to forget this step when it comes to gear, so let’s focus on this.



 There is no way to know if your backpack is waterproof unless you test in the rain. There is also no other way to know if your hammock is durable unless you try lying on it! The same goes for shoes, clothes, lighters, and everything else.


Before heading out, test everything, get recommendations from others, and make sure you know how to use all your gear!


Train for Your Adventure


More than 2,650 miles of hiking with a total elevation gain of just under 500,000 feet is what you will need to achieve in the PCT. This alone is already a physical challenge. You may also encounter blisters, Lyme disease, and other injuries while on the way.


To prepare yourself for the long-term hike, train your body by lifting weights, going on other backpacking trips, and trying to lose or gain weight. It is also recommended that you rake a first-aid course and double-check the contents of your first-aid kit. 


Consider Section Hiking


Some find it impossible to commit more than five months of thru-hiking, so section-hiking becomes an option. It is also a strategy to knock off a full length of a trail like PCT but to accomplish the feat over several hiking seasons.  


Many say that this activity is not a true thru-hike, but the definition of a thru-hike is hardly set in stone. It’s all about challenging yourself!


Flip flop to Complete a Classic Thru-Hike 


A flip flop has at least one section that’s hiked in the opposite direction. The upside to this approach is avoiding the throngs of hikers who follow a classic end-to-end scenario. You can also strategically flip flop to avoid severe weather. The downside to flip-flopping is that your trail and transportation itineraries are more complicated.


Start Slowly and Work Up Faster


Starting the trail out too fast can cause injuries. You don’t have to accomplish big miles within the first few days or your feet will swell, you can get thin splints, get tired easily, or even get a fracture. Even if you’re fit and well-trained for this, we’re sure you didn’t train on a mountain, so don’t be overconfident or you’ll destroy your body trying the same mileage up and down mountains carrying a full pack. 


Here’s a great plan:



  • First week – maximum of eight miles per day
  • Second week – 10 miles maximum per day
  • Third weel – 12 miles maximum per day
  • Fourth week – 14 miles maximum per day


Positive Attitude is Key to Success


Thru-hiking is not just about the environment, gear, and physical aspect. Focus on what’s best for you during the hike, your mental attitude. It’s probably the most important trait for you to achieve your thru-hike for whatever purpose.


It will not only take the right pair of boots, the right company, or even the best hiking strategy, but it will also take unwavering commitment and mental toughness. Humans can achieve many amazing things when they focus and work hard, and you are no different.
